CASE STUDY: amoeba - aple av EP
Case study #2 filmtiki Online Marketing for filmmakers course (supported by Skillset)
amoeba (aka Scott McPherson) has been working as a director, animator and audiovisual artist since the early 90ies. Last year his a/v experimental art was signed under lightrhythmvisuals to be released as the aple av/DVD EP. This groundbreaking work also includes remixes from international a/v artists.
Scott came to the filmtiki course in 2009 to streamline his Social Media marketing efforts for this project. He already had a phenomenal web presence, but he also wanted to professionally use the social web for marketing, especially facebook and vimeo.
Scott set up a custom site for the project in order to raise the profile of his art - http://aavaple.info/ and started DIY marketing on facebook, vimeo and selected VJ forums, as well as via email in 2010. During the duration of the programme, Scott embraced all the possibilities that Social Media harness, and he decided to launch a remix competition (restrukture) on vimeo to further promote his DVD. On this channel he supplies tracks for artists to remix, and the winner will be featured on the new aple album. Furthermore, Scott’s excellent social marketing work got the Russian Cyberbrothers interested in his work, and they are now also hosting and promoting both the aple EP and the restrukture competition.
The aple EP went on sale on July 1st, as did the competition. Thanks to Scott’s outstanding DIY marketing efforts, sales took off right away, as did competition entries.
